Synopsis

In the fictional Zagrum company, new executive Tom Callum is summoned for a one-on-one meeting that will alter his perspective forever. His mentor, Bud, exposes Tom to the liberating truth about “being in the box” – the self-deception that causes us to view co-workers as objects rather than people with valid needs.

As Tom’s eyes are opened, he begins recognizing how his distorted mindset has damaged relationships and hindered results across all areas of his life. From his wife and children to colleagues and employees, Tom realizes his inward-focused behaviors have created unnecessary conflicts.

Bud reveals the path to breaking free – developing an “outward mindset” focused on understanding others’ viewpoints and extending the same compassion we desire. As Tom applies these insights, extraordinary transformations occur in his workplace, family dynamics, and overall fulfillment.

“Leadership and Self-Deception” is a profound yet accessible guide to escaping the boxes that trap us in self-betrayal. By embracing its eye-opening wisdom, you’ll experience a mindset shift that unlocks deep connections, resolves conflicts, and propels you toward achieving your highest potential as a leader.

Quotes from this book

“Self-deception is like this. It closes our eyes to the true causes of problems, and once we’re blind, all the “solutions” we can think of will actually make matters worse. Whether at work or at home, self-deception obscures the truth about ourselves, corrupts our view of others and our circumstances, and inhibits our ability to make wise and helpful decisions.”
― Arbinger InstituteLeadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box

“Self-betrayal” 1. An act contrary to what I feel I should do for another is called an act of “self-betrayal.” 2. When I betray myself, I begin to see the world in a way that justifies my self-betrayal. 3. When I see the world in a self-justifying way, my view of reality becomes distorted. 4. So — when I betray myself, I enter the box.”
― Arbinger InstituteLeadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box

“They’re all examples of self-betrayal — times when I had a sense of something I should do for others but didn’t do it.”
― Arbinger InstituteLeadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box
