Thomas J. Stanley (1944 - 2015) was an American writer, business theorist, and pioneering researcher on the affluent. He earned a doctorate in business administration from the University of Georgia. He served on the faculty of several prestigious universities, including the University of Georgia, Georgia State University, and the University at Albany, State University of New York.

Stanley is best known for his groundbreaking work "The Millionaire Next Door," a New York Times bestseller that challenged conventional wisdom about wealth accumulation.

Through extensive surveys and data analysis, Stanley uncovered the often frugal and disciplined habits of America's self-made millionaires, debunking the notion that lavish spending equates to wealth.

His findings revealed that many millionaires live relatively modest lifestyles, prioritizing saving and investing over conspicuous consumption.

Stanley's research provided practical insights into building wealth through hard work, perseverance, and strategic financial planning.

A lifelong academic and devoted family man, Stanley resided in Atlanta with his wife Janet until his untimely death in 2015 at the age of 71.
