About

John Wiley & Sons, Inc., commonly known as Wiley, is a prominent American multinational publishing company with a rich legacy that spans over two centuries. Founded in 1807, Wiley has transformed from a modest printing shop in Manhattan into a global leader in academic and professional publishing. The company specializes in producing a diverse array of content, including books, journals, encyclopedias, online products and services, training materials, and educational resources aimed at undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education students. With a strong emphasis on scientific, technical, and professional fields, Wiley has established itself as a trusted source of information for researchers, practitioners, and students worldwide.

History

Wiley was founded in 1807 by Charles Wiley as a small printing shop in Manhattan. By the 1820s, the company shifted to publishing and bookselling, producing works by renowned authors such as James Fenimore Cooper, Washington Irving, Herman Melville, and Edgar Allan Poe. In the late 19th century, under the leadership of William Halsted Wiley, the company pivoted toward scientific and technical publishing, focusing on textbooks for engineering and expanding into social sciences and business management. The 20th century saw significant growth as Wiley incorporated in 1904, established its first overseas subsidiary in 1959, acquired Interscience Publishers in 1961, and went public in 1962. More recently, Wiley expanded through acquisitions such as VCH Publishing Group in 1996, Hungry Minds (including the "For Dummies" series) in 2001, Blackwell Publishing in 2007, and Hindawi in 2021. Today, Wiley remains a global leader in academic publishing, adapting to digital innovations while maintaining its commitment to quality and excellence.
