Tom Tellez is a legendary American track and field coach renowned for his pioneering work in sprinting, biomechanics, and kinesiology. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Tellez has coached some of the world’s greatest athletes, including Olympic champions Carl Lewis, Leroy Burrell, and Joe DeLoach, guiding his sprinters to multiple world records and Olympic gold medals. He served as head coach at the University of Houston for 22 years, building a powerhouse program and later continuing as a volunteer coach, while also influencing coaching education globally through published research and clinics.

Tellez’s approach blends scientific rigor with practical coaching, emphasizing the technical and biomechanical principles that underpin elite performance. His passion for understanding athletic movement was inspired by early mentors and formal studies in physical education and biomechanics, including a master’s thesis on the cinematographic analysis of the shot put.
