Book description
Daniel Kahneman, winner of the Nobel Prize in economics and author of Thinking, Fast and Slow

"The discoveries that grew out of the marshmallow studies add up to one of the most insightful research stories in the history of psychology. Whatever it is now, your view of human nature will change profoundly as you read this brilliant book."
Daniel Kahneman, author of Thinking Fast and Slow

“The Marshmallow Test: Understanding Self-Control and How to Master It” is a fascinating exploration of willpower by the psychologist who pioneered research on delayed gratification. Walter Mischel takes readers on a journey through decades of ground-breaking studies to reveal the cognitive and emotional processes that enable self-control.

At the heart of the book is Mischel’s famous marshmallow experiment, in which children were given a choice between one treat now or two treats if they could wait. This deceptively simple test turned out to predict future success in many areas of life. Mischel examines why some children were able to wait while others gave in, and what this tells us about the nature of self-control.

Readers will learn:

• How self-control operates in the brain
• Strategies to cool “hot” emotions and resist temptation
• Ways to reframe situations to make delaying gratification easier
• The impact of trust and reliability on a child’s ability to wait
• Techniques to distance yourself from immediate desires
• How to set up your environment to support long-term goals

Mischel goes beyond theory to offer practical applications, showing how self-control principles can be applied to lose weight, quit smoking, save money, and achieve other important life goals. He also explores the implications for education, parenting, and public policy.

Written in an engaging, accessible style, this book will appeal to:

“The Marshmallow Test” overturns conventional thinking about willpower, showing that self-control can be learned and strengthened at any age. Filled with fascinating studies and real-world examples, it provides an authoritative look at the science of self-control and offers valuable lessons for living a more successful and fulfilling life.

Author biography

Walter Mischel was an Austrian-born American psychologist renowned for his pioneering research on personality theory and social psychology. He is best known for the “Marshmallow Test,” a ground-breaking study on delayed gratification, which has profoundly impacted his understanding of self-control and its implications for life outcomes. Mischel held the esteemed position of Robert Johnston Niven Professor of Humane Letters in the Department of Psychology at Columbia University, and his work earned him a place among the most cited psychologists of the 20th century.

Born in Vienna in 1930, Mischel fled to the United States with his family following the Nazi occupation. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where he excelled academically, earning a scholarship to New York University. Initially pursuing premedical studies, he shifted his focus to psychology, obtaining his bachelor’s degree in 1951 and later earning a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Ohio State University in 1956. His academic journey included teaching positions at several prestigious institutions, such as Harvard University and Stanford University, before joining Columbia University in 1983.

Mischel’s “Marshmallow Test” demonstrated that children’s ability to delay gratification predicted significant long-term outcomes like academic success and better health. His research suggested that self-control could be learned and served as a protective buffer against various vulnerabilities later in life. This work advanced psychological science and influenced behavioural economics and education policy fields.

Mischel received numerous accolades throughout his career, including election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. He was also awarded the University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Psychology in 2011. Beyond his professional achievements, Mischel enjoyed painting and traveling, often in Paris and Bend, Oregon. He resided in Manhattan until his passing in 2018.
