Author biography
Daniel Goleman, Ph.D., is a renowned psychologist, science journalist, and author, best known for his ground breaking work on emotional intelligence. He holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Harvard University, where he also served as a visiting lecturer. Goleman reported on the brain and behavioural sciences for The New York Times for twelve years, earning two Pulitzer Prize nominations for his journalistic contributions.
Goleman’s seminal book, Emotional Intelligence (1995), revolutionized the understanding of intelligence by emphasizing the importance of emotional and social skills. This work spent over a year and a half on The New York Times Best Seller list and has been translated into 40 languages, making it a global bestseller. His subsequent books, including Working with Emotional Intelligence and Primal Leadership, further explore the application of emotional intelligence in personal and professional settings.
Born in Stockton, California, Goleman was influenced by his parents, both of whom were college professors. His academic journey took him from Amherst College to Harvard University, with significant research conducted in India on meditation and ancient psychologies. This diverse educational background enriched his interdisciplinary approach to psychology and emotional intelligence.
In addition to his writing, Goleman co-founded the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) and the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations, both of which aim to integrate emotional literacy into educational and corporate environments. His work continues to impact how organizations and schools approach emotional and social learning.
Goleman resides in the Berkshires of Massachusetts with his wife, Tara Bennett-Goleman, a psychotherapist. He enjoys meditation and traveling, and he is a proud father and grandfather. His personal experiences and professional insights are reflected in his work, making his contributions both relatable and profound.
