Author biography

Martin Seligman is a renowned American psychologist, educator, and author widely recognized as the father of positive psychology. He is the Zellerbach Family Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and the former president of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Seligman’s groundbreaking work on learned helplessness and his subsequent shift to studying human potential and well-being have significantly influenced the field of psychology.

In his book “Flourish,” Seligman presents a new understanding of happiness and well-being, introducing the PERMA model (Positive emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment) as key elements of human flourishing. His research and writings have revolutionized the approach to mental health, focusing on building strengths rather than just alleviating suffering.

Seligman has authored numerous influential books, including “Learned Optimism,” “Authentic Happiness,” and “The Hope Circuit.” His work has been applied in various settings, from education and the military to public policy. When not writing or teaching, Seligman enjoys playing bridge and has achieved notable success in competitive tournaments. He lives with his wife in Philadelphia and has seven children.
