Tristan Gooley is an award-winning British author and natural navigator, internationally recognized for his expertise in reading the landscape and interpreting nature’s signs. He holds a BA in history and politics from Newcastle University and is the only living person to have both sailed solo and flown solo across the Atlantic, achievements that underscore his deep practical experience in navigation and observation of the natural world. Gooley has spent decades exploring diverse environments and learning from indigenous navigators, such as the Dayak in Borneo and the Tuareg in the Sahara, further honing his unique skills.

Gooley’s passion for decoding the language of nature led him to write several bestselling books, including How to Read a Tree, How to Read Water, The Walker’s Guide, and The Natural Navigator. His works, often described as illuminating and accessible, have helped countless readers unlock the hidden stories in trees, weather, and landscapes. Gooley is often referred to as the “Sherlock Holmes of Nature” for his ability to reveal the subtle clues that most people overlook.

He has instructed people in the art of reading trees and nature for over twenty years, inspiring a deeper connection with the outdoors. Gooley currently resides in the UK, where he continues to write, teach, and explore. When not immersed in nature, he enjoys sharing his discoveries with fellow enthusiasts and adventurers.
