Thomas William Phelps (1902-1992) was a distinguished investment professional with over 40 years of experience in the financial world. He worked as a private investor, columnist, analyst, and financial advisor, gaining deep insights into stock market dynamics.ย Phelps authored the influential book "100 to 1 in the Stock Market" in 1972, which advocated for a long-term, buy-and-hold investment strategy.
Throughout his career, Phelps held various positions that shaped his investment philosophy. He served as an economic advisor to Socony Mobil Oil Company and was a partner at the investment counsel firm of Scudder, Stevens & Clark.ย His expertise was recognized with an Outstanding Achievement award from the University of Minnesota in 1956.
Phelps' approach to investing emphasized patience and the potential for extraordinary returns through careful stock selection and long-term holding. His book analyzed stocks that had increased 100-fold in value over a 40-year period, identifying key characteristics of these high-performing investments.
Beyond his professional achievements, Phelps was a life trustee of the American Schools of Oriental Research, demonstrating his commitment to education and cultural studies. In his later years, he retired to Nantucket, Massachusetts, where he continued to share his investment wisdom until his passing at the age of 90.
