Jane Roberts (1929-1984) was an American author, poet, and psychic medium best known for channeling the entity known as "Seth." Born in Saratoga Springs, New York, Roberts attended Skidmore College before embarking on a prolific writing career. In 1963, she and her husband Robert Butts began experimenting with a Ouija board, leading to the emergence of Seth, an "energy personality essence" that Roberts claimed to channel. For over two decades, Roberts held regular trance sessions, during which she spoke as Seth, with Butts transcribing the messages.
Roberts authored numerous books, including the ground-breaking "Seth Speaks: The Eternal Validity of the Soul" (1972), which became a cornerstone of New Age philosophy. Her work explored consciousness, reality, and the nature of the soul, challenging conventional beliefs about existence and personal growth. Despite her role as Seth's channel, Roberts maintained a skeptical approach to her experiences, encouraging readers to think critically and trust their own instincts.
In addition to the Seth Material, Roberts wrote poetry, fiction, and non-fiction under her own name. Her unique contributions to metaphysical literature have left a lasting impact on the field of consciousness studies. Jane Roberts passed away in 1984, but her work continues to influence spiritual seekers and researchers worldwide.
