Charles Fillmore (1854-1948) was an American religious leader and co-founder of Unity, a New Thought movement, with his wife Myrtle Page Fillmore. Born on an Indian reservation in Minnesota, Fillmore overcame early financial struggles and health issues to become a pioneering spiritual teacher. Despite limited formal education, he studied extensively in spiritualism, Eastern religions, and metaphysics.
In 1889, Fillmore and his wife established a prayer group that evolved into the Unity movement. He authored numerous books on spirituality and prosperity, including his seminal work "Prosperity," published during the Great Depression. Fillmore's teachings emphasized the power of positive thinking, gratitude, and spiritual consciousness in achieving abundance.
A prolific writer, Fillmore intentionally never copyrighted his works to ensure their free distribution. He promoted vegetarianism for much of his life and operated Unity Inn, one of the world's largest vegetarian restaurants at the time. In his later years, Fillmore believed in the possibility of physical immortality and reincarnation.
Charles Fillmore resided in Kansas City, Missouri, where he continued to lead the Unity movement until his passing in 1948.
