Author biography

Brendan J. Hughes is an eCommerce and digital marketing expert with over 25 years of experience in the field. His journey began in 1997 when he built the public website for Trinity College, Dublin, as a postgraduate student in computer science. Since then, Hughes has been at the forefront of eCommerce transformations for numerous consumer brands, developing strategies to accelerate their growth.

As the former Chief Digital Officer at Independent News & Media (INM plc), Hughes was responsible for developing paid digital media offerings for the newspaper group. His experience “on the other side of the fence” led him to advocate for greater transparency in advertising spend. Hughes served as a board member of the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), working to address imbalances in the media landscape.

Currently, Hughes is the CEO of Optily, an ad-tech startup that aims to level the playing field for small and medium-sized businesses advertising on major platforms like Facebook and Google. His book, “Accelerate eCommerce Growth,” offers a practical framework for scaling eCommerce businesses through digital advertising.

When not immersed in the world of eCommerce and advertising, Hughes can be found sailing a Laser dinghy in Dublin Bay, where he resides with his wife Anne and their three children.
